"closer, closer, stop" series
closer, closer, stop is a collection of acrylic paintings on canvas that each illustrate a specific memory. the colours and abstract shapes show a synesthetic representation of the memory, whereas the overlaying line demonstrates the passing of time. for each piece, the line portion – a single, continuous line that never intersects with itself – was painted in one sitting as a meditation.
these paintings illustrate how incomplete, yet influential, our memories can be. as a psychology student many years ago, i was surprised to learn about how factually inaccurate our memories often are, and yet we treat them as fixed and reliable. this tension between my abstract recollection of each memory and its finer details – like the song playing in the background of a conversation or the scent of a person’s perfume – create a timestamped understanding of the experience that will continue to morph and fade over time.
